He manipulates people because he knows the power of trust and uses it to his advantage to accomplish his evil schemes. He can deceive his friends that he is truly a kind person, an individual they could depend on. How wrong they were! Throughout the play, he crafts manipulative words to hide his true intentions and get closer to his friends who later end up as victims of deceit. He is a happy person with an honest persona, and the characters including Othello refer to him as a friend. As the play comes to an end, four victims lay by the side including Desdemona, Othello, Bianca, and Rodrigo (Resnik, 22). All these people are the victims of betrayal, deceit and utter manipulation. Iagos character suits him as the villain in the play. His immoral depth is chilling and unfathomable. He over and again demonstrates what ambition can make a man do. The fact that he uses is the position to manipulate and cause pain to his friends cements his heinous nature. In the play, two motivations push Iago to carry out his schemes. Firstly, rumor has it that Iagos wife Emilia is cheating on him with his boss Othello. Secondly, Othello overlooks Iago and gives promotion to Cassio to be his lieutenant (Shakespeare, 25). The fact he does not get the position shocks Iago who has a lot of experience in the military as compared to Cassio who has no experience at all. The jealousy that filled Iago after he is not promoted is revealed in the play. To choose the best title to describe Iago between madman, a devil incarnate or a rational person, I would say he, not a sound human because his actions are too gross and painful t o explain at times. He is not a madman because he makes conscious decisions that lack the conscience of a rational being. He was thoughtful, calculative, and manipulative and his end game was clear to him. His motives fit the description of evil actions a sane man makes (Shakespeare, 27). In the play, Iago asks Cassio to have a drink with him. The motives were hidden as he had a plan in his mind that he passes to him with the motive to create a rift with Roderigo. He planned to paint Cassio as a hopeless drunk for Otello to promote him to the position Cassio holds. The decision was rational and well calculated with the intention of soiling the Cassios reputation. While this is the least evil in comparison to his other heinous actions, it does not paint him as a madman. Another evil plan Iago developed was to manipulate Roderigo to help him carry his deeds. As a master manipulator, he convinces Roderigo to join him and succeeds. The plan, however, fails because evil actions do not a lways prevail over good deeds (Shakespeare, 47). In the play, Iago takes the name for the definite con-man and pretender. While many time in the play he is referred to as the honest man, he makes remarks to the gullible Roderigo that he is not who people think he is. In the revelations he makes to Roderigo, he reveals the kind of hate he has towards Moor. It is ironic considering that he openly tells Othello how much he loves him making him a hypocrite. Often in the book, he is portrayed as witty and intelligent and while on the battlefield he is a warrior although he is not a lieutenant to Othello. Further, in the play, he reveals a bitter and vindictive character. The fact that he is a cruel man yet can pass as a high caring individual is a feature of his character that cements his real personality. How he can keep his true feelings hidden makes him a master of deception. As a master manipulator, he cons people around him including his beloved wife (Isaksson, 23). It is amazing how conscious and intelligent people such as Cassio and Othello fail to discover his cunning nature. None of the people that include Montano and Desdemona figure his deceptive nature and many of his victims including Roderigo fall for his schemes. To carry out his plans, Iago acquires jewelry and money to woo Desdemona (Isaksson 30). In the play, the critical period is when Iago manipulates Rodrigo to kill Cassio. The scheme was after Roderigo threatened to expose Iago to Desdemona. He uses flattery to manipulate Roderigo and promises him goodies if he succeeded to murder Cassio. Iagos actions expose his evil plans. He is the master planner for the fall of Othello, the murder of Cassio, the killing of Desdemona (Isaksson, 28). To sum his evil nature, he is the murderer of Emilia and Roderigo. At the end of it all, he shows no remorse because these are just sport to him. His sadistic nature gives him the pleasure to watch others in pain and suffering. He thrives in chaotic situatio ns where he sees people undergo tremendous suffering. It is necessary to note that any retention decision should be made after much evidence is collected and after several meetings with parents. It is essential that you do not spring it on them at the final parent/teacher conference of the year. If grade retention is a possibility, it should be brought up early in the school year. However, intervention and frequent updates should be the focal point for most of the year. What Are Some Reasons to Retain a Student? There are many reasons that a teacher may feel that retention is necessary for a particular student. The biggest reason is typically the development level of a child. Students enter school at around the same chronological age but with ​varying developmental levels. If a teacher believes that a student is behind developmentally compared to the majority of students in their class, then they may wish to retain the student to give them â€Å"the grace of time† to mature and catch up developmentally. Teachers may also choose to retain a student because they simply struggle academically when compared to students at the same grade level. While this is a traditional reason for retention, it is necessary to note that unless you figure out why the student is struggling, it is likely that the retention will do more harm than good. Another reason teachers often retain a student is due to the student’s lack of motivation to learn. Retention is often ineffective in this case as well. Student behavior can be another reason that a teacher chooses to retain a student. This is especially prevalent in lower grades. Poor behavior is often tied to the developmental level of the child. What Are Some Possible Positive Effects? The biggest positive effect of grade retention is that it provides students who are truly behind developmentally a chance to catch up. Those type of students will begin to thrive once they are developmentally on grade level. Being in the same grade two years in a row can also provide a student with some stability and familiarity, especially when it comes to the teacher and the room. Retention is most beneficial when the child that is retained receives intensive intervention specific to the areas in which they struggle throughout the retention year. What Are Some Possible Negative Effects? There are many adverse effects of retention. One of the biggest negative effects is that students who are retained are more likely to drop out of school eventually. It is also not an exact science. Research says that students are more negatively impacted by grade retention than they are positively affected by it. Grade retention can also have a profound impact on a student’s socialization. This becomes especially true for older students who have been with the same group of students for several years. A student who has been separated from their friends could become depressed and develop poor self-esteem. Students who are retained are likely physically bigger than their classmates because they are a year older. This often causes that child to be self-conscious. Students who are retained sometimes develop serious behavior issues, especially as they age. What Grade(s) Should You Retain a Student? The rule of thumb for retention is the younger, the better. Once students reach fourth grade, it becomes virtually impossible for retention to be a positive thing. There are always exceptions but, overall, retention should be primarily limited to early elementary school. There are so many factors that teachers need to look at in a retention decision. It is not an easy decision. Seek advice from other teachers and look at each student on a case-by-case basis. You could have two students who are remarkably similar developmentally but due to external factors, retention would only be appropriate for one and not the other. What Is the Process for a Student to be Retained? Each school district typically has its own retention policy. Some districts may oppose retention altogether. For districts that do not oppose retention, teachers need to make themselves familiar with their district’s policy. Regardless of that policy, there are several things a teacher needs to do to make the retention process much easier throughout the year. Identify struggling students within the first few weeks of school.Create an individualized intervention plan to meet that students individual learning needs.Meet with the parent within a month of initiating that plan. Be straightforward with them, provide them with strategies to implement at home, and be sure you let them know that retention is a possibility if significant improvements aren’t made over the course of the year.Adapt and change the plan if you are not seeing growth after a few months.Continuously update the parents on their child’s progress.Document everything, including meetings, strategies used, results, etc.If you do decide to retain, then follow all school policies and procedures dealing with retention. In this process, the data related to clinical procedure is collected to evaluate the effectiveness of specific organizational protocols and performance of health care providers against quality indicators. This form of quality measurements can be done by various ways such as evaluating the characteristics of a care setting, patient related health outcomes and the process or service present to provide care. The process data is useful to compare and analyse whether the current health care procedure in health care organization is consistent with routine clinical care or not(Measuring Health Care Quality: An Overview of Quality Measures. , 2017). Hence, the data related to process measures mainly aims to evaluate whether the procedure in clinical setting is consistent with established standards of care or not. Having well-defined process measures ensure that recommended care is pr ovided and professional standard of care is maintained. Despite the benefit of process data on identifying areas of improvement and disease management in health care organization, collecting these data is very challenging. This is because certain process data in specialized area of care is not available. Majority of process data focus on preventive care procedure and this ignores data related to teamwork and organizational culture, which is also an indicator for quality of care in health care organizations(Moore, et al., 2015). Hence, in future, it is recommended to collect process data in the area of care coordination and technology too as this also influences the quality of care. As stated by Donabedian, (1988), data related to quality of care in health care organization is categorized into the structure, process and outcome. The outcome data is the information related to effects of care or particular services on the health status of individual patient or patient group. Some example of outcome data may include degree of patient satisfaction level after care, improvement in health status and changes in behavior after intervention. Therefore, the purpose of outcome measures in health care organization is to look at the effects of care on patients health, functioning, behavior and health status. Outcome measures are most important for patients and the data is often collected by patient-reported surveys or observation report. It may involves data related to remission rate, number of hospitalizations needed after care and quality of life related outcome of patient after care. Collecting appropriate and well-defined outcome measures is also limited because identify meaningful outcome measures related to a service may be difficult. Secondly, obtaining detailed information and evaluating them is a time consuming process and many enough data cannot be found. There are also chances of biasness in such data because of the effects of social determinants of health on health outcomes of specific patient. The background and difference in patient population groups cannot give true information regarding quality improvement in health information of patient(Price, et al., 2014). However, the data is useful in assessment of quality care in health care setting. Nowadays, great attention is pa id to performance improvement and outcome monitoring as both helps to track the quality and efficiency of care. Process and health care outcome data can be collected for the clinical activity of fall prevention in health care organization. Preventing falls in vulnerable patients is considered important for health care organizations because fall or injuries is associated with traumatic injuries, increase in hospital stay and increase in health care cost too. The clinical care activity related to fall prevention is in relevance with improving the quality and safety of patients during hospital stay. As patients come with conflicting health issues, it is important to maintain physical and mental functioning in an individual(Ganz, A., Shekelle, G., 2013). This is done by fall prevention activities like managing the fall risk factor of patients and optimizing nursing care and hospital environment to maintain the safety of patients. However, the clinical priority of engaging in effective fall prevention activities is difficult for nurses and other staffs because this needs to be balanced with many o ther considerations such as providing the best possible care to patient and maintaining the mobility of patients. Secondly, the success of fall preventing activities in health care setting is also dependent on interdisciplinary approach to care(El-Bendary, et al., 2013). During a nursing care placement, a hospital was found to have high rate of falls and injuries after admission. To evaluate the performances of hospital in fall prevention activities and reasons for deteriorating in quality and patient safety outcomes, process data and outcome data related to the fall prevention and management in the hospital was collected. The main aim of collecting process data was to identify the current protocol for fall management and how interprofessional health care team coordinated with each other to prevent falls. Therefore, main purpose of collecting process data was to identify the system level improvement in fall prevention activities to prevent falls. One of the initial areas of focus during the collection of process data was to evaluate organizations readiness for fall prevention activities. This was collected by means of survey tools which focused on getting the following information of the health care organization: Do all members and health care provides understand the need to prevent patient related injuries or falls in hospitals? Do health care leader support the fall prevention initiative? Are all resource and protocol related to fall management established in the organization Is the need for compliance with the fall prevention activities communicated all health care staffs? The informations or data collected for the above questions can give great detail regarding the commitment of the organization to prevent fall and manage fall risk in patients. Another approach that was useful in assessing the quality of care was the use of hospital survey method to evaluate the culture of safety present in the hospital. Collecting data in this area is also important for assessment of quality and safety because safety culture and fall prevention are found to be interlinked to each other(Hempel, et al., 2013). Presence of safety culture is an indicator of positive attitude towards change. In a safety culture, the interprofessional teams are bound to follow all systematic activities to prevent falls. This may includes assessment of patient after intervention, controlling the fall risk factor, educating patients about preventing falls and modifying the environment around patient to prevent falls(Wang, et al., 2014). Hence, data related to safety culture can determine the organizations preparedness or lack of preparedness regarding the fall prevention activities. Apart from collecting the process data to identify strength and limitations in assessment and management of fall, outcome data related to falls were also collected. This was done to get a clear picture regarding the process present for fall prevention as well as the effect of the activity of patients outcome. Such method of data collected will eventually expose the human or organizational factors that impedes standards fall prevention activities and lead to formulation of plan to improves the current process of fall prevention and management too(Neily, et al., 2007). Therefore, the data related to the outcomes of fall prevention activity was collected by surveying patients and analyzing the incident to determine the cause of injuries in patients. The key data elements that can be collected from surveys included fall rates in hospitals, types of falls reported, severity of falls and impact of fall on quality of care and daily life activities. The incident reports can be specifically designed to inquire about the time, location and type of falls in particular patient. On the basis of categorization of anticipated falls or unanticipated falls, it can be easily judged whether the nursing staffs or other inter-disciplinary team took the right approach to respond to anticipated risk of falls(Quigley, et al., 2017). Hence, the outcome date related to fall prevention activities can give idea about the overall pattersn and trends related to fall occurrence in hospital setting. Hence, by means of surveys with nurses, health care providers and evaluating incident reports related to fall in hospitals, both outcomes measure and process measures for preventing and managing falls can be evaluated. This data can be eventually used to promote quality and safety by addressing the organizational factors or process related to fall prevention and changing the attitude of staffs towards fall prevention too. One research study gave an idea about the successful patient safety programs where root cause analysis helped to identify the factor of communication problem leading to fall and injuries in hospital(Miake-Lye, et al., 2013). This limitation of lack of communication and inter-professional collaboration for managing fall of patient was addressed by setting three strategic objectives. This included implementing tracking system to identify patients at high risk of fall and communicate to all health care staffs regarding the changes needed in plan of care. Secondly, stri ngent system was set in place to timely report about falls rates and injuries on the basis of severity. A reporting and signage program was also implemented to systematically communicate about patients who are at risk of fall(Quigley, et al., Measuring fall program outcomes., 2007). Hence, the data collected process related to process and outcome measures finally promotes changes in the right area which enhance the quality of care and safety of patients too. The essay summarized the need to provide high quality health care to patients and assessment regarding the quality of care in health care organization was proposed by collecting data related to structure, process and outcomes measures for health organization. This process of quality assessment is considered critical for quality improvement and driving the positive change process in health care organization. The essay gave a discussion regarding how process and outcome data related to a clinical activity can be collected and how this process can inform about the inefficiency present in the system, structure or health care staffs or patient. The whole process was made clear by giving example regarding the quality assessment and data collecting process for evaluation of fall prevention activities in health care organization.
